2024 Melbourne Winter Anaesthetic Meeting

On behalf of the ASA Victoria and ANZCA Victorian Regional Committee, we welcome you to our 2024 Melbourne Winter Anaesthetic Meeting held at the Sofitel on Saturday 27 July and Sunday 28 July. We’re excited to have our traditional meeting program of lectures, a practice evaluation session, emergency response workshops and small group discussions face-to-face again this year.

Our Saturday meeting presentations are held in the Arthur Streeton Auditorium at the Sofitel and the Practice Evaluation: small group M&M component scheduled in the last session will have small table discussions held in the Fitzroy Ballroom and Auditorium Foyer.

Sunday workshops include two emergency response workshops: obstetric haemorrhage and anaphylaxis, along with two paediatric focussed workshops. The workshops will be in the Sofitel’s east and west tower suites on the 35th floor.

We hope you enjoy our 2024 meeting and workshops. If you have time while you’re in Melbourne, visit the Arts Centre, go to the footy at the MCG, or see one of the many plays or musicals on offer. See the Visit Victoria website for more suggestions.

Practice evaluation: small group M&M

An optional session at the end of the program which requires:

  • Specific registration (opt-in) required at meeting registration (no extra cost)
  • Overall meeting registration is available to all anaesthetists and trainees who are either a member of ANZCA or ASA but the practice evaluation session is for senior trainees and anaesthetists only (i.e. no medical students, no prevocational trainees)
  • Attendees will be expected to come prepared to discuss a case relating to an anaesthetic incident or challenge that they would share in a small group discussion and be willing to reflect on
  • Attendees will be expected to participate actively during the small group discussions

For this session everyone will relocate to tables (located in the Fitzroy Ballroom and Auditorium foyer in the Sofitel) to conduct small group discussions. Each small group of 8-10 participants will be facilitated by an anaesthetist colleague, who will facilitate the group in engaging in reflective discussion in a purposeful and respectful manner.

This session will create a safe, judgement free environment where you may discuss cases that you found interesting or challenging. For example, cases may feature because you learnt something particular or because it was unusual, presented a clinical, diagnostic, management or communication challenge or because it will change your practice moving forward etc.

We expect active participation from all members of the group. It also goes without saying that discretion and confidentiality will be needed to bear in mind.

Please bring a case along that you will be willing to discuss in your small group.

Formal case presentation is not required, a brief case outline and then discussion is all that is required. We do not want perceived lack of a case to be a barrier to attending. So, if you do not feel you have a suitable case, perhaps you would like to discuss a case that occurred a bit further in the past or that you witnessed, or a colleague was involved in. It is not necessary that an adverse outcome / morbidity or mortality occurred.  When reflecting on your case in the group session, some questions to consider would include, for example:

- What happened?
- Why was it important?
- How might you have influenced things for a different outcome?
- How did this change your practice?
