ANZCA Foundation research grant round open for applications

The ANZCA Foundation research grant round for studies commencing from 1 January 2026 opened for applications on 1 December.   Thank you to all our wonderful donors for continuing to help make it possible to offer a wide range of grant opportunities.

Applications are invited from ANZCA and FPM fellow clinician investigators for studies in anaesthesia, pain medicine or perioperative medicine. New and previous applicants are again strongly encouraged.
The grant round will also be advertised in the Summer ANZCA Bulletin.

Applications forms and guides for all categories of ANZCA Foundation grants including Novice Grants, Project Grants, the Patrons Emerging Investigator grant, the two Professional Practice Research Grants, and the Environment and Sustainability Grant and all related information are available on the research pages of the ANZCA website.
Resources that may assist applicants are also available in the ‘Research Hub’ section of the ANZCA Library.

SA/NT research day for trainees

On 30 November the foundation general manager was privileged to be one of the presenters at an inspiring one-day seminar organised to introduce ANZCA trainees and aspiring researchers to clinical research in the specialties.

Dr Amy Chapman of Flinders Medical Centre initiated and arranged the well-attended day at Adelaide’s Lion Hotel, with assistance from ANZCA, to encourage prospective researchers and introduce them to the many support options available to them should they embark on a research career.

Delegates enjoyed a smorgasbord of presentations including but not limited to talks from ANZCA Clinical Trials Network Executive Professor Tomas Corcoran and network manager Ms Karen Goulding, a presentation from Professor Edoardo Aromotaris on higher degrees by research and short courses offered by JBI at The University of Adelaide, ANZCA Library research resources by Ms Kathryn Rough, and life as a clinician researcher from Dr Fiona Taverner.

The Foundation presented the range of research grants and scholarships available to novice and emerging investigators, thanks to our dedicated patrons and donors, as well as the online resources it has facilitated by working closely with the ANZCA Emerging Investigator Subcommittee, Professional Practice Research Network Executive, ANZCA Library, and Research Committee.

Emerging Investigator Subcommittee identifies Support Strategies

The subcommittee’s final meeting for 2024 on 10 December included the important agenda item of identifying strategic priority activities to pursue in 2025 which it believes have strong potential to actively support novice and emerging researchers (EIs).

While 14 activities were identified as important to pursue, a shortlist of five activities was confirmed for including in its 2025 strategic action plan. These were: delivering targeted support information sessions at major ANZCA educational meetings; advocacy for the provision of research education options for provisional fellows and for clinical research time for EIs, working with the foundation and donors to expand grants and scholarship funding, further encouraging peer-to-peer support including a mentoring program, and developing a community of research practice.

The foundation looks forward to working with the subcommittee in 2025 to help remove barriers for emerging investigators. This is essential for the future academic and clinical research pipeline, the ongoing advancement of anaesthesiology, pain and perioperative medicine, and the clinical leadership and outcomes being provided by of ANZCA and FPM fellows.  We also look forward to the central role of our visionary foundation donors, who are vital to our capacity to provide this support.

A huge thank you to all our generous donors and patrons, and very best wishes from the Foundation team to you and your families for the Festive Season, and the forthcoming New Year.
