Foundation-funded Research at the ASM

Please also join us on Saturday 3 May at the ASM in Cairns at 3:30pm, for our special ‘ANZCA Foundation-funded Research’ session being chaired by Prof Britta Regli-von Ungern-Sternberg and A/Professor Lis Evered.

Studies recently funded by the foundation will be featured in presentations from the principal investigators on the outcomes from a selected sample of completed studies, including:

  • Professor Philip Peyton on ‘Redefining pulmonary uptake of anaesthetic gases’,
  • Associate Professor Marc Russo on ‘Immune-to-brain signalling in CRPS: unravelling the detrimental relationship between inflammation and autonomic dysfunction’,
  • Professor Jamie Sleigh on ‘Computational simulation of the molecular on channel targets of ketamine and its analgesic analogues’,
  • Professor Simon Mitchell on ‘Preventing hypoxia, hypercapnia and gas narcosis in rebreather diving’,
  • Dr Steven McGuigan on ‘'Capturing Xenon: an exploration of the chemistry required to capture Xenon gas'.

ANZCA CTN at the ASM

The ANZCA Clinical Trials Network will run several fascinating workshops at the ASM on Friday 2 May, which will be especially useful for emerging investigators and those at regional and rural sites.

These will start on Friday morning with ‘Getting started in multicentre research and running a department’, followed by ‘Rural and regional engagement in clinical trials’ and ‘Preparing a grant application’ after morning tea, and ‘Consumer engagement in your research’, and ‘Meet the editors – how to get published’ just after lunch.

Funded studies commencing in 2025

The ANZCA Foundation’s research grant application and selection process for studies to commence in 2025 was completed in September, with $A1.62 million awarded through the ANZCA Research Committee

Fifty applications were received and 28 grants approved for funding after peer-review, including the Academic Enhancement Grant, the Douglas Joseph Professorship, seventeen project grants, four second year project grants, two novice investigator grants, the Patrons Emerging Investigator Grant, one Professional Practice Research Grant, and the Skantha Vallipuram ANZCA Research Scholarship. An allocation of $40,000 was also made for ANZCA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) pilot grants.

ANZCA Foundation research grant funding round still open

The research grant round for studies commencing from 1 January 2026 remains open for just under seven more weeks, and closes at 5pm on 1 April.

We strongly encourage all interested ANZCA and FPM fellow and trainee investigators to apply, from novices through to advanced researchers, across all genders, and from urban to regional and rural sites. Several categories are available.

All applications forms and guides are available on the research pages of the ANZCA website.
A range of resources that may assist applicants are also available in the ‘Research Hub’ section of the ANZCA Library online. In particular, any applicants considering studies relating to Indigenous health are encouraged to contact us to access specific resources relevant for research in this area.
