SIMG stories: Journey to Aus

04 December 2024

Specialist international medical graduate (SIMG) Dr Sharon D'Souza completed her anaesthesia training in India, before moving to Adelaide and then Melbourne.

Dr D'Souza tells us about her journey to Australia under the SIMG pathway.

"Having completed my anaesthetic training in India and in my pursuit of looking for some international upskilling, I secured a job in intensive care in Adelaide under the short term training scheme. After a year in critical care I switched to an anaesthesia position in Melbourne."

"Over the next two years and in the midst of COVID, my husband happened to complete his SIMG process with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and we had two lovely daughters. I then worked towards getting general registration and completed the Australian Medical Council exams."

"I completed my ANZCA assessment in November 2023 when I felt ready to take on more challenges. Being partially comparable meant I had to do the final fellowship exam. I worked this whole year dedicated to the exam and was successful at my first attempt in November 2024."

"There are some excellent exam resources for SIMGs such as I-Excel and the ASA final exam support sessions. Besides working in the system and knowing local practice helps a long way. It is equally important to keep an open mind and be receptive to the feedback that you receive along the way. All this in addition to hours of studying and practicing under real exam conditions helps you cross the bridge."

"My workplace at Western Health, Melbourne has been extremely supportive all along. I also appreciate the time dedicated by all the consultants to help me. I’m extremely grateful to my family who stood by me and made this journey easier."
