Prof David Story
Prof David Story commenced his term as ANZCA President in May 2024.
Professor David Story is Foundation Chair of Anaesthesia at the University of Melbourne, and inaugural Head of the University Department of Critical Care, covering anaesthesia, emergency medicine, and intensive care medicine.
He is ANZCA President, and a national and internationally recognised research investigator and leader in the evolving discipline of perioperative medicine.
He is a member of the ANZCA Safety and Quality Committee and its chair from 2020 to 2022, a long-standing member of the ANZCA Research Committee, and a founding member of the ANZCA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) and chair from 2005-2011. In 2018 he was awarded ANZCA’s highest honour; the Robert Orton Medal.
Professor Story’s main research interest is clinically and cost-effective approaches to reducing perioperative risk, complications, disability, and mortality.
He has co-supervised eight PhD and three masters degree students through to completion, and is currently supervising an anaesthetist PhD student researching perioperative medicine for indigenous patients in the Northern Territory. He has over 230 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, 6,300 citations, and an H-index of 39, and has been a co-investigator on peer-reviewed research grants totalling over $A25 million.
Currently he is Associate Director of the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health, and has held several roles with government including being on Medicare review clinical committees, and a member of Safer Care Victoria’s Perioperative Consultative Council. He was a councillor on the National Health and Medical Research Council for the 2015-2018 triennium.
Professor Story is currently the Associate Editor of the leading medical journals Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
Clinically, Professor Story is a Staff Anaesthetist at Melbourne’s Austin Hospital, where he provides perioperative care for most procedural specialties, including liver transplantation.
