2024 Combined SIG meeting

It is our pleasure to invite you to join the Leadership & Management, Medical Education, Wellbeing and Communication in Anaesthesia Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at this year’s Combined SIG meeting at Coogee Beach, Sydney.

This year’s meeting is convened by the Leadership and Management SIG. The theme is ‘Navigating Excellence, Inspiring Change: The Leadership Journey’.

We are joined by invited speakers and some of our profession’s thought leaders to explore themes such as:

  • Leadership without a title – how to be a leader at different stages of your career.
  • Heads of Department panel.
  • Leadership outside the theatre environment.
  • Challenging Conversations.
  • Change Management.

The program will include plenary lectures, panel discussions and workshops focusing on the skills fundamental to leadership in health care, including coaching, communication skills with the Process Communication Model and how to have a difficult conversation.

We look foward to welcoming you to Coogee.

Workshops

The meeting will include the following workshops:

Coaching workshop: Have you wondered what coaching is? How might coaching help you in your role as a medical educator or leader? This workshop will answer your questions about coaching and teach you evidence-based coaching skills that will make you more effective in your workplace as an educator or leader. It will involve lots of practice, so everyone gets an opportunity to coach and be coached. Come along with some thorny problems you’d like to resolve! The workshop has been developed and will be facilitated by trained coaches who are also experienced medical educators and anaesthetists.

Process Communication Model - Key2Me workshop: PCM is a language-based communication, personality assessment and management methodology offering a logical and structured skill-set. Understanding personality, how and why others are different, is a first step to building authentic working relationships and honing leadership skills. It provides a tool to identify individual language preferences and characteristics, and an understanding of how to learn to predict and influence behaviour. Participants will be provided, through a pre-workshop online questionnaire with a personal profile. You will leave this workshop with a tool you will be able to use straight away.
  • PLEASE NOTE: There will be an extra cost of A$350 for materials for this workshop, which will include a personal profile with a folder, pens and notepads. You will be invoiced separately for this before the workshop.

How to have a difficult conversation workshop: Whether you’ve got to talk to someone about their behaviour at work, or you’re trying to negotiate a request with an intimidating boss, or you just want to set some housekeeping rules with your recalcitrant teenagers, we’ve all had conversations that either were tough, or would be tough if we could just muster the confidence to break the ice. This workshop will take the examples you bring and set them to life with some underlying principles for successfully navigating a difficult conversation.

Sustainability at SIG events

What we're doing to reduce our carbon footprint at the meeting

  • Water stations made available at the venue, making it easier for delegates to use these while onsite to fill reusable water bottles.
  • We have eliminated printed collateral and single use plastic. We no longer provide satchels, print programs or function tickets for the special interest groups meetings.
  • Promoting the useability of the meeting onsite mobile app.
  • In most cases we use digital signage and where possible single use signage has been eliminated. If printed signage is required, we ensure it is printed on recycled material and can be recycled.
  • The meeting lanyards are made of bamboo which is a renewable resource and eco-friendly product that will break down over time. We’ll have dedicated recycling stations at the venue.

What you can do

  • Make sure you recycle your lanyard! Look out for the recycling stations.
  • Pack, take and use your own keep cup and water bottle to the meeting. Filtered water stations and washing stations will be available at the venue.
  • Where possible, reuse hotel linen, as this will help save water.
  • Choose to offset the carbon emissions of your flights. Most airlines offer this for a small fee.

How the venue is working for better outcomes

  • IHG® Hotels & Resorts has launched Journey to Tomorrow, a series of ambitious new commitments to make a positive difference for our people, communities and planet over the next decade.

We continue to strive towards fostering a more sustainable future for our members and the community.
