ANZCA Council meeting update - April 2024

Read a report of the ANZCA Council meeting held on 12-13 April 2024 in person.

During the director’s session, council was pleased to welcome and hear updates from Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee Chair, Mr Richard Garvey and Jana Investment Consultant, Mr Kevin Fernando.

Council welcomed the New Zealand National Committee Chair Dr Graham Roper and new ANZCA Trainee Committee Co-chair Dr Jenna Donaldson to its internal session. Associate Professor Kerin Fielding provided an update from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons during the open session. 

Finance and audit

Financial report

Councillors noted the ANZCA financial reports to 31 December 2023 and authorised the president and vice-president to sign off the financial statements and other relevant documents.

Councillors noted the audit findings and recommendations by Grant Thornton along with management representation letters for Australia and New Zealand.

Appointment of external auditor

Council endorsed the appointment of BDO as the college external auditor replacing Grant Thornton pending approval at the May 2024 ANZCA Annual General Meeting.

 

College projects

Ti Tiriti plan

Council endorsed the project plan implementing “Giving Effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi – Realising ANZCA’s Kawa whakaruruhau (cultural safety) and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations”.

AI implications

Council approved funding to engage artificial intelligence (AI) expertise to guide the development of an AI strategy and roadmap and develop a suitable governance framework for safe and responsible adoption of the technology across college functions.

Supporting professionalism and performance guide

Council approved the revised guide “Supporting Professionalism and Performance: A guide for anaesthetists and pain medicine physicians” 2024, for release and publication to the ANZCA website.

Substance use disorder professional document development

Council approved the development of substance use disorder professional document.

Establishing the chapter of perioperative medicine

Council approved two new roles to support the embedment and ongoing sustainability of the Chapter of Perioperative Medicine and endorsed activities to commence phase 1 of establishment of the chapter to be launched in November 2024.

Election of vice-president-elect

Following a secret ballot, the President, Dr Chris Cokis, declared Dr Tanya Selak as vice-president-elect.
