IASP announces 2025 global year theme: pain management, research and education in low- and middle-income settings
Globally, pain is a significant public health issue, and its impact is felt most in low- and middle-income settings. In these regions, as well as in underserved populations such as Indigenous peoples, migrants, and refugees, access to effective pain care is often limited. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) is shining a light on this critical issue with its 2025 Global Year theme: "Pain Management, Research, and Education in Low- and Middle-Income Settings."
Endorsed by the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM), Australian Pain Society, and the New Zealand Pain Society, this initiative highlights the barriers people face in accessing quality pain care and the urgent need for action to reduce health inequities. It also focuses on vulnerable populations in high-income countries, such as refugees and culturally diverse groups, who face unique challenges in receiving adequate pain treatment.
Key goals:
- Increase access to pain care: Improve availability and quality of pain management in underserved regions.
- Boost research efforts: Advocate for more funding and attention to research in low-resource settings, where studies are often limited.
- Educate healthcare professionals: Enhance training to ensure clinicians are equipped to provide effective, compassionate care.
- Promote equity: Address disparities in care, focusing on both local solutions and global collaboration.
You are invited to participate in this initiative and promote the theme within your workplace. Download the artwork for the 2025 Global Year.
