Fasting, breastfeeding and smoking advice updated in review of PG07
29 July 2024
We have released the final updated version of our pre-anaesthesia consultation professional document and background paper which includes information on fasting, breastfeeding and smoking.
A document development group was established to review the 2017 versions of PG07 Guideline on pre-anaesthesia consultation and patient preparation and its background paper. Three PG07 expert groups were formed to review the appendices on fasting, breastfeeding and smoking.
Former professional document PG12(POM) Guideline on smoking as related to the perioperative period is now included as an appendix to PG07, with an additional focus on vaping.
The review process involved extensive stakeholder consultation and a six-month pilot period.
The majority of the pilot feedback focussed on appendix 1 - fasting, in particular fasting duration for clear liquids and the use of liberal clear liquid strategies such as "SipTilSend" (which was featured in the December 2023 ANZCA Bulletin). Recommendations regarding fasting in paediatrics have also been clarified, with the help of SPANZA.
There is also acknowledgement of the challenges of situations involving delayed gastric emptying and the emerging role of gastric ultrasound.
Here is the final updated version of professional document PG07 Guideline on pre-anaesthesia consultation and patient preparation (short title: PG07 Pre-anaesthesia consultation) and accompanying Background Paper (PG07BP).
Thank you to the document development group and three expert groups.
