Persistent pelvic pain statement approved

26 July 2024

A multidisciplinary document development group (DDG) has developed a statement on persistent pelvic pain and endometriosis. The document was produced after an extensive review of the current evidence.

The aim of PS15(PM) Statement on the clinical approach to persistent pelvic pain including endometriosis-associated pain is to assist medical practitioners with the application of multidisciplinary pain management principles when treating persistent pelvic pain. The DDG has also produced accompanying material for consumers. The document provides concise information that can assist in prioritising government spending.

It aligns with growing evidence that challenges the view that endometriosis is the main cause of persistent pelvic pain. Early adoption of a multidisciplinary pain management approach may also reduce the rate of unnecessary surgery in this setting.

This is a position informed by the knowledge and experience of dual fellows of the faculty and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The statement (including its background paper PS15(PM) BP) is available on the website. They will be piloted for six months, and we encourage your feedback during this time.

Our media release is here.
