Anaesthesia supervisors of training toolkit
As an anaesthesia supervisor of training (SOT), you play a vital role in the training, assessment, and welfare of your trainees and should have a broad understanding of the anaesthesia training program.
The role of supervisors is both challenging and rewarding. These resources aim to support you in your role as you guide trainees through the training program.
Understanding training requirements
The below resources detail the requirements of the anaesthesia training program.
Use your college ID to access a range of support resources for specific components and processes of the training program:
Trainees requiring additional support
There will be times when your trainees may need more support to cope with the demands of training. Consider starting them on a trainee support process (TSP) (formally known as Trainees experiencing difficulties process (TDP)). The TSP is a supportive process for those trainees who need extra help.

A series of checklists has been developed to help Supervisors of Training (SOTs) identify and assist a trainee who is struggling. Use your college ID to access these checklists in networks.
Supporting Anaesthetists’ Professionalism and Performance - A guide for clinicians document has been developed to assist Fellows and trainees by providing them with a framework for understanding professionalism and performance as it applies to the practice of anaesthesia.
You can find more information regarding the trainee support process, see section 3.4 of the handbook for training or contact the college at [email protected]
Personal and professional learning
Learn to teach with the ANZCA Educators Program, a modular practical teaching course. The course is delivered throughout the year in major centres around Australia and New Zealand.
Use your college ID to access resources that will help you with:
Welfare and support
The ANZCA doctors support program is available to all fellows, trainees and specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs). ANZCA has engaged the professional services of Converge International, a specialist in psychology, mental health and wellbeing who will provide a confidential and independent counselling and coaching service. This service is available 24/7.
The director of professional affairs (assessor) is available via [email protected] to provide advice on challenging training issues or clarification on training program requirements.
Other welfare support services by jurisdiction are available here.
Training and supervisor forms
Below is a list of application forms relevant to anaesthesia training program. Trainees may occasionally submit forms to you for endorsement.
Workplace based assessment assessors and specialised study unit supervisors without FANZCA will need to be nominated so relevant access to the training portfolio system can be created. Nominations for other supervisory roles can be made via email to [email protected].
Training and TPS forms
The workplace based assessment forms can be downloaded by trainees or WBA assessors if internet availability prevents TPS access. The WBA assessor is responsible for submitting the WBA online after the assessment using their TPS login so the WBA is recorded in the trainee's online portfolio
Individual trainee applications
Applications to the director of professional affairs (DPA) assessor must be made prospectively.
Trainees requesting changes to training or exceptions that require prospective approval in regulation 37 will now have up to four weeks to submit their applications
Forms for supervisors
Application, registration and recognition of prior learning
Scholar role activities - Evaluation forms and Guidelines
