ANZCA Partnership Grants

ANZCA recognises the importance of large collaborative bodies of work and the support of fellows when applying to large partnership funding schemes. The Research Committee will only consider grants supporting the science and practice of anaesthesia, pain medicine and perioperative medicine.

Eligibility

  • Chief Investigator A (CIA) must be a FANZCA (including honorary FANZCA) or FFPMANZCA (including honorary FFPMANZCA). The involvement of multiple FANZCA/FFPMANZCA, particularly including early to mid-career researchers, is preferred.

  • The CIA of the ANZCA application must also be the CIA of the partnership grant.
    • Potential exemption: In recognition of the collaborative efforts of large projects, there is the potential for an exemption to this rule if and only if the FANZCA/FFPMANZCA is CIB or CIC of the partnership application. In that case, the application can be considered by the Research Committee if the applicants can provide a strong case that there is sufficient involvement of ANZCA fellows in a major leading research role within the project AND if the Research Committee is satisfied that there is sufficient benefit to the college to warrant support. This decision will be taken by the Research Committee on a case-by-case basis and requires at least 2/3 of voting members to be in favour of support.

  • All chief investigators (CIs) of the partnership grant must be named on the ANZCA grant application, and their contributions must be specified.

  • ANZCA funding is contingent on the success of the partnership grant.

  • The total monetary funding supplied by ANZCA will be no more than 25 per cent of the external funding requested, excluding in-kind support (in-kind support of salaries is not counted as monetary support) and no more than 15 per cent of the total amount funded. Evidence must be provided. A minimum of four other funding agencies providing monetary (not in-kind) support to the project must be listed on the application.

  • Any partnership grant will count towards the limit of 2 applications for each FANZCA/FFPMANZCA CI on the grant for the entire duration of the partnership grant (in line with other ANZCA funding categories).

  • Evidence of the CI order must be provided to the Research Committee on the form of the final submitted grant application to the partnership funding agency, including a complete list of funders and their funding commitments.

Timeline

Any planned partnership grant application must be announced to the Research Committee as soon as possible to allow for the planning of reviewer availability and allocation to a scheduled meeting. At this time, the Research Committee will advise the applicant of the dates of the next meetings. Partnership grants will be assessed at existing, pre-planned Research Committee meetings, which usually are in late February/early March, May and early September.

Applications must be submitted at least 3 months before the meeting to allow sufficient time for review. There will be no out-of-session meetings for the assessment of partnership grants.
A maximum of 3 partnership applications will be considered for funding in any calendar year.  If they are not filled by the applications made in the normal funding round with submission in April, they may be considered at the other meetings of the committee in February, May or September.

Application

The application to ANZCA must include:

  • Title of the final application

  • Names/institutions of all investigators, including the final order of the investigators on the partnership grant, any changes to the investigators or their order on the partnership grant must be provided to ANZCA before the final decision on funding. All CIs of the final application must be named as CIs on the ANZCA application.

  • Complete budget, including a list of all partners, detailing whether funding is already secured or requested and what the funding entails (e.g. monetary support, in-kind support), and a detailed plan of how funding will be secured if not all partners come on board. This can be added as additional pages to the standard application.

  • The application will be assessed per the Research Committee's standard practice with two reviewers and a Research Committee member as a spokesperson

Amount requested

The maximum amount of funding considered will be $70,000 for a one-year grant and no more than a total of $100,000 for multi-year grants. Grant length will be as per the external partnership grant scheme guidelines.
