The Chapter of Perioperative Medicine (POM) was launched in November 2024, following the successful pilot of the first unit of study in the ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine in 2023, marking a significant strategic milestone for ANZCA. This launch was the culmination of years of work dedicated to advancing perioperative medicine and embedding the Perioperative Medicine Care Framework.
The chapter plays a key role in advancing education through the course, supporting the development of clinical expertise. Additionally, it advocates for the integration of perioperative care within health systems and contributes to policy development to improve patient outcomes across the perioperative pathway.
The chapter serves as a dedicated community of practice for specialists across multiple disciplines, including anaesthetists, surgeons, physicians, intensivists, and general practitioners. It forms part of ANZCA’s long-term strategy to lead and shape the field of perioperative medicine.
