Overview
We have recently undertaken a review to ensure the program is in line with current medical education theory.
It is available to all fellows, specialist international medical graduates and trainees (other than introductory trainees). The course is delivered in locations around Australia and New Zealand.
The course includes pre-course reading and a post course activity.
Continuing professional development (CPD)
Participants of the ANZCA and FPM CPD program will be able to claim time spent at AEP under the Knowledge and skills category ‘Short format learning’ activity.
Five core modules
Focuses on the core elements required to plan and deliver effective learning and teaching experiences with emphasis on psychological safety, needs assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and reflection.
Enables the participants to apply tools to facilitate learning in the clinical setting, consider utilising planned and opportunistic learning, concepts related to teaching a technical skill and adapting teaching and learning in a variety of clinical settings.
Delves into feedback and clinical supervision. The feedback section looks at models for an effective feedback conversation and opportunity to apply the theoretical concepts into practice. The clinical supervision section explores the factors required for effective clinical supervision and provides opportunity to consider relevant supervision based on clinical scenarios.
Provides an overview of the key concepts in assessment, focuses on WBAs as learning tools and relationship with the feedback conversation and considers evaluation of the learning and teaching encounter from a learner and teacher perspective.
Enables the participants to actively engage in a variety of approaches to engage small groups of learners in interactive learning and teaching experiences including a small group discussion. Exploration of approaches to working with different participant behaviours that may disrupt leaning in a group will be covered.
Trainees and scholar role activity exemptions
The course provides an opportunity for trainees to be exposed to activities relevant for the scholar role activities.
Trainees who complete the five core AEP modules and undertake the post-course activity will get credit towards the scholar role activities modules “teach a skill” and “facilitate a group discussion/running a tutorial”.
Further details can be found in on page 41 of the ANZCA Handbook for Training.

Workplace-based assessments (WBAs) have been an integral part of our ANZCA Training Program since 2013. The intent of WBAs is to provide valuable and structured learning opportunities through focused observations by specialists and feedback conversations.
We've appointed workplace-based assessment (WBA) leads across Australia and New Zealand to provide WBA education and support to individual departments.
