Teaching setting in Ulimaroa
Unit of study lead

The Unit of study lead serves as a central coordinator for the educational provision within their assigned unit. They act as a key knowledge resource on the course structure, governing regulations, curriculum, and handbook. The lead provides essential guidance to clinical immersion sites and supervisors, ensuring they understand and meet the unit's requirements. In addition to supporting supervisors, the Unit of study lead oversees interventions that enhance participants' learning experience. They are responsible for selecting the external assessor panel for selected clinical-based assessments and play an active role in planning and coordinating unit-specific workshops, as well as assisting with introductory workshops for supervisors.

This comprehensive role ensures that each unit is delivered effectively and that all participants and supervisors are well-supported throughout the learning journey.

Supervisor

Supervisors will plan and facilitate the participant's clinical immersion experience at a hospital. There is a requirement to have completed the supervisor induction workshop (see below). Supervisors may be assigned up to three participants to supervise and will spend approximately one hour per week engaging in supervisor duties. The main role of the supervisor is to facilitate and coordinate the experience of each participant completing a unit of study in the clinical setting. They will arrange and coordinate clinical immersion experiences and facilitate assessment opportunities for participants.

External assessor

External assessors are responsible for evaluating course participants performance through various assessments. They ensure the fair and consistent application of marking criteria and provide constructive feedback to support participants’ growth. External assessors work closely with the Unit of study lead to maintain assessment integrity and uphold the course's academic standards.

Workshop speaker

Workshop speakers are subject matter experts who share their knowledge and experience on specific topics within the workshop. They engage participants through presentations, discussions, and practical insights, fostering an interactive learning environment. Speakers are responsible for delivering relevant, evidence-based information, guiding discussions, and encouraging participant engagement to deepen understanding of the subject matter. Their role is critical in providing expert perspectives and enriching the overall workshop experience.

Content reviewer

Content reviewers are responsible for ensuring the accuracy, relevance, and quality of educational materials within the course. They review and provide feedback on course content, including module content, assessments, and other resources, to ensure alignment with the course objectives and educational standards. Content reviewers verify that all materials are evidence-based, up-to-date, and meet regulatory and institutional guidelines. Their role is crucial in maintaining the integrity and academic rigour of the course.

ANZCA is currently recruiting the above roles for 2025. If you are a graduate of the Chapter of Perioperative Medicine (ANZCA) and are interested in any of the roles, please email us.

New role onboarding process

Unit of study lead

The onboarding process for the Unit of study lead includes an initial agreement of up to 3 years. After this initial term, the agreement can be renewed for an additional 2 to 3 years. This structured approach allows for continuity, stability, and the opportunity to build expertise and maintain consistency within the course.

Supervisor

GChPOMs are eligible to attend the scheduled supervisor workshop dates, regardless of their current affiliation with a clinical immersion site. After attending the workshop, a supervisor agreement will be issued to attendees at existing clinical immersion sites, as well as those at sites onboarding for the next trimester. Upon receipt of a signed agreement, supervisors may take on delegated responsibilities within the current trimester and/or be assigned participants for the following trimester.

The supervisor agreement is established for a 3-year term and can be renewed for a further two terms. Additionally, when a new clinical immersion site is approved, all GChPOM-qualified individuals listed as working at that site will receive an invitation to contribute to the clinical immersion experience as a supervisor.

Other roles

Other roles are based on the availability for each trimester. GChPOMs expressed interest in the roles and will be notified by the POM team on the next steps.

Supervisor introductory workshop

ANZCA will host introductory workshops for all new supervisors, providing an overview of the supervisor role, information on the course curriculum, navigating the online platform, planning participant clinical immersion experiences and conducting assessments.
