Can I apply only if I am certain that my unit meets the requirements?
No! We would love to hear from everyone interested and encourage units to contact us. This pilot allows for various flexible options, and the faculty is open to exploring these with you.
Why are there multiple options?
Each regional pain unit is unique. The flexible options are designed to be adaptable to different regional contexts – with different strengths, resources, and community needs – allowing units to choose what works best for them.
Will regional units involved in this pilot have lower accreditation standards?
No, the flexible options maintain high standards while expanding access to quality training in regional contexts. The faculty is proud of the quality training our accredited sites provide, and these flexible options have been developed within the bounds of the current standards that apply to all FPM-accredited pain units. Feedback and evaluation of the pilot will guide future improvements.
Why explore flexible options?
Regions that are distant from metro areas have a higher burden of chronic pain but fewer pain specialists. Contributing to this is the lack of regional training opportunities for pain medicine. Flexible accreditation supports regional training and helps retain doctors in these communities.
Are other specialist medical colleges exploring flexibility?
Yes, many colleges are exploring the use of blended and remote supervision, training networks, simulation learning and more. There is also motivation from the federal government to expand regional training and reduce healthcare inequities.
Does this pilot include funding of a trainee position?
This pilot does not include funding for trainee positions. The faculty expects to work with units accredited through this pilot to explore funding opportunities for trainees following the conclusion of this pilot.
Can New Zealand sites apply?
The pilot is funded by the Australian Federal Government through its FATES initiative, so at this stage, we can only accept applications from Australian units. However, after evaluation, we envision that these flexible options will be expanded beyond the pilot to more regional sites including in New Zealand.
