The Darwin Department of Anaesthesia warmly invites you to the 2025 Northern Territory Anaesthesia Continuing Education Conference, “Staying Cool Under Heat”.
The conference will feature exceptional speakers from across Australia, alongside local experts and thought leaders, who will explore strategies to manage risk and uncertainty in anaesthesia.
In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to attend one of three workshops, all conveniently held onsite at the Darwin Convention Centre:
- Gastric Ultrasound Workshop
- Major Haemorrhage Emergency Response Workshop
- Cultural Safety Workshop
Our social program includes a dinner on Saturday evening, hosted at the beautiful Wharf One Food & Wine, offering stunning views and exceptional cuisine. Tickets for these events can be reserved during registration, and partners are warmly invited to join.
We recommend registering early to secure your place and enjoy networking with peers in the tropical surrounds of Darwin. While here, why not extend your stay to explore the stunning Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park, or the Tiwi Islands?
June is a lovely time to visit Darwin - we look forward to welcoming you, where knowledge meets the tropics at the iconic Darwin Convention Centre.

Workshops
Gastric Ultrasound Workshop
This workshop will focus on two key areas: assessing aspiration risk and airway management guidance. Participants will learn to accurately evaluate the risk of tracheal aspiration by visualising gastric contents and volume and develop skills in using gastric ultrasound to guide decisions regarding airway management techniques and timing of procedures.
Hands on training
- Scanning Practice: Participants will gain practical experience scanning various gastric states (empty, fluid, solid) on volunteers.
- Image Interpretation: Training in interpreting ultrasound images and reporting findings.
- Formative Assessment: DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills) assessments to provide constructive feedback.
Content
- Anatomy: Review of the anatomy of the stomach and adjacent organs.
- Technique: Proper techniques for performing gastric ultrasound exams.
- Image Findings: Understanding the ultrasound appearances of an empty stomach, liquid, and solid food.
- Clinical Application: Learning how to apply gastric ultrasound in clinical scenarios.
Benefits
- Improved Patient Safety: By accurately assessing aspiration risk, healthcare professionals can make more informed decisions to minimize the risk of complications.
- Enhanced Skills: Participants will develop the skills and confidence to perform and interpret gastric ultrasound exams.
- Continuing Education: Provides valuable continuing education and training opportunities.
Major Haemorrhage Emergency Response Workshop
This emergency response workshop will review the management of major haemorrhage in the context of surgery, obstetrics, and major trauma. Case based discussions will focus on strategies to minimise bleeding, assess and optimise coagulation and efficiently utilise blood products.
Cultural Safety Workshop
The NT is a place of great cultural diversity. Cross-cultural training has been delivered to staff within non-government and government health services in the NT for decades. This type of training intends to achieve culturally appropriate and safe health services for Aboriginal Australians. The NT government recognises the importance of a culturally competent public sector and therefore requires that all agencies provide cross-cultural training to their employees.
The purpose of the project is to create greater awareness of the range and diversity of training programs available for health and other service providers in the NT. It enables them to choose programs that meet the requisites of their staff and type of service delivery. There is little evidence that any of the programs were evaluated although the report includes views of current/past staff on the properties that make programs successful and effective in different health service delivery settings.
The project does not seek to reach a definitive conclusion on a perfect model of cross-cultural training, but rather initiate conversations within organisations around what changes can be made to existing programs to develop and improve the cultural competency of staff and consequently service delivery.
