Dr Ranjita Sharma – Supervisor of Training, Staff Specialist Anaesthetist, Royal Hobart Hospital

What’s new in regional anaesthesia/ASURA Highlights

Review of what's new in regional anaesthesia from the largest ASURA conference held in Hobart between 13-15 March.  A record number of anaesthetists attended this event with more than 450 attendees, 87 workshops completed and more than 2024 workshop registrations.

Dr Oliva Ong - The Heart-Centred Method Institute, Rehabilitation and Pain Physician

Presentation 1: Multidisciplinary care in pain management: Optimising patient outcomes through collaboration
Effective pain management requires a multidisciplinary approach that brings together the expertise of physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals. This presentation explores the role of collaboration in pain management from the perspective of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM). Attendees will gain insights into the latest evidence-based practices, the importance of integrating biopsychosocial models, and the role of nervous system regulation in optimizing patient outcomes.

Presentation 2: Clinician Burnout and mental health: Strategies for resilience and recovery

Burnout and mental health challenges are at a critical tipping point in the healthcare industry, impacting clinicians' well-being, patient care, and organizational performance. In this presentation, we delve into evidence-based strategies for identifying early signs of burnout, addressing chronic stress, and enhancing mental health in clinical practice. With a focus on nervous system regulation, mindset shifts, and practical interventions, participants will walk away with actionable tools to cultivate resilience, improve work-life integration, and sustain their passion for caregiving in a demanding environment.

Dr Jane Leadbeater – Staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital

Presentation 1: One Case, many insights: Navigating the latest in obstetric anaesthesia

Embark on a case-based journey that illuminates the latest guidelines in key areas of obstetric anaesthesia. Delve into contemporary algorithms for obstetric airway management and major haemorrhage, emphasising effective blood management through point-of-care testing. Participants will also discover an innovative safety and quality pathway for patient-led follow-up of neuraxial anaesthesia on the ward.

Presentation 2: Sit! Stay! Sleep! The art and science of veterinary anaesthesia

How is a dog induced? What’s the best way to intubate a horse? Can we use epidurals in cows? These are just a few of the questions addressed as we dive into the fascinating world of veterinary anaesthesia. In this presentation, we’ll explore the unique aspects of anaesthetic protocols across different species, focusing on comparative physiology, pharmacology, and airway management. We'll also examine the role of regional anaesthesia in enhancing patient care and delve into the challenges faced by veterinary professionals through engaging case studies. Join us for an informative and interactive journey through the art and science of keeping our animal patients sleepy, safe and comfortable.

Dr David Brooke – Anaesthesia Provisional Fellow, Launceston General Hospital

Establishing an awake intubation course at the Launceston General Hospital

As a provisional fellow I established an awake intubation course at the Launceston General Hospital. The course teaches both the dexterity skills necessary to perform the procedure of awake intubation, but also - and more importantly - the shared experience and empathy that comes from having been on the receiving end of the procedure. This empowers the proceduralist to better explain things to the patient when this is done outside of the simulation setting.

Dr Dane Blackford – Sustainability practices - Drug display/N20 pipeline testing

Dr George Hyde – Social media addiction

Dr Ianthe Boden - Prehabilitation
