Accurate measurement of opioid prescribing is pivotal in advancing opioid stewardship within healthcare facilities. This critical step ensures compliance with Quality statement 5 of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care's Opioid Analgesic Stewardship in Acute Pain Clinical Care Standard (CCS), focusing on the responsible use of modified-release opioid analgesics.
Leveraging a range of methods, including advanced electronic data capture, facilities can efficiently track prescribing rates, even in environments lacking comprehensive electronic health records. This approach not only simplifies the collection of essential prescribing data and medication usage but also enhances the ability to monitor and improve prescribing practices effectively.

The pharmacist is the key to success
Mr Jaiden Fullerton-Harvey, Clinical Pharmacist, Wollongong Hospital, NSW.
In July 2023, the process for hospitals to achieve accreditation and demonstrate compliance with the NSQHS standards changed from scheduled visits to the Short Notice Assessment Program (SNAP). Establishing an opioid stewardship program and working toward meeting recommendations within the NSQHS Clinical Care Standards (CCS) provides organisations with evidence that can be used during SNAP assessments.
